Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are continuing to increase worldwide, according to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO). They can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and parasitic arthropods. It is estimated that more than one million people acquire a sexually transmitted infection every day. Co-infections with multiple sexually transmitted pathogens can also occur.
The four pathogens Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Treponema pallidum, and Trichomonas species alone are responsible for approximately 357 million new STI cases worldwide each year. Therefore, molecular genetic diagnostics should be able to detect as many pathogens as possible simultaneously in order to enable rapid initiation of targeted therapy. For bacterial STIs and trichomoniasis, effective and well-established systemic treatments are available. Successful treatment helps to prevent further transmission of infections.
