The group of non-tuberculous mycobacteria includes all mycobacteria that do not belong to the M. tuberculosis complex or the M. leprae complex.

NTM are ubiquitous in the environment and are frequently detectable on mucosal surfaces. Distinguishing between colonization and infection is therefore crucial. In the presence of an intact immune response, disease is rather rare. In patients with pre-existing conditions or undergoing immunosuppressive therapy, diseases—especially of the lungs—are described more frequently, and their incidence has increased significantly in recent years.
