Epstein-Barr virus is ubiquitous and belongs to the Herpesviridae family. The prevalence of EBV infection among adults ranges between 95% and 99%. Following infection, the virus persists in infected, resting cells. Reactivation of EBV infection can occur not only in immunosuppressed or organ-transplanted individuals, but also in immunocompetent donors.
